The students are asked to enter the role of designers of snowflakes as elements of decoration artefacts.
The project deals with modeling of snowflakes after inquiry based study of their basic properties. The modeling could be part of various decorative art and crafts, including graphic design.
Holiday-themed decorative crafts (Christmas cards, posters, cookies,); Paper crafts; Textile crafts (knitting, crocheting, weaving); fashion crafts (jewelry, garments) and combinations of those.
The students are asked to enter the role of designers of snowflakes as elements of decoration artefacts.
For the purpose they are expected to make an inquiry on snowflakes from different aspects using information from the Internet, then to make a conjecture about their common features from geometric perspective, to propose appropriate tools for making a snowflake model, and finally to produce several models (including computer ones).
Making computer simulations and modeling (of snow crystal formation); Photography
The students start with a challenge to draw by hand several images of snowflakes. Then they are involved in inquiry process aiming at raising a conjecture about a common property of the snowflakes. They are expected to find results of research on snowflakes, discuss possible classifications and write down properties relevant to the geometric representation of the snowflakes. The next stage of the project deals with suggesting appropriate tools and creating paper and computer models of snowflakes as a basis for more complex decorative items. The final stage includes reflection and discussion of the advantages and shortcomings of the tools used, formulation of their own problems and research questions as well as encouragement to try to answer some non-trivial question.
