Jerusalimia
The bride was from a good Christian family.
Since the 17th century, wealthier Bulgarians would do a pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Upon their return home, they receive the title Hadzhia and acquire higher status and praise in society. As a testimony to their visit to the Holy Lands and their title, they bring back a painted canvas with scenes from the Old Testament – called Jerusalimia.
The Jerusalimia in Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv is an impressive size of 270/326 cm and is bought by Hadzhi Stantcho Kostadinov in 1886. It is painted with egg tempera, liquid gold, and silver. This biblical story in pictures consists of 115 compositions and 565 personalized images. A reoccurring figure is a triangle with the all-seeing eye of God and the rays emanating from it, which symbolizes one God in three Images (the Holy Trinity), and the rays – the sunrays of justice.
