The Artificial Intelligence Department originates from the artificial intelligence thematic group of the Computer Science Department. Around this group in 1985 the Artificial Intelligence department was established and was headed by prof. Valentin Tomov.

The Artificial Intelligence Department is generally concerned with research and education in the field of theory and applications of artificial intelligence and modern information technologies. The major research efforts are currently focused on the following areas:

• Knowledge based information systems;
• Pattern Recognition, image processing and applications;
• Computer methods in algebra;
• Applications of computer algebra systems – approaches and realisation aspects;
• Application of information and communication technologies in modern society.

At the present time the team of the department works on the following research projects:

• Theory and applications of artificial intelligence;
• Computational tools in help of linguistics research;
• Mathematics and Music;
• Modern Algebra;
• GUIDE: Government User Identity for Europe - Creating a European standard for interoperable and secure Identity Management Architecture for eGovernment;
• PRIME Providing Real Integration in Multi-disciplinary Environments;
• TENCompetence - Building the European Network For Lifelong Competence Development.

The members of the Artificial Intelligence Department take active part in education of students in computer science in the following universities: Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, New Bulgarian University, Technical University – Sofia, Shoumen University “Ep. Konstantin Preslavski”, Middle East Technical University, Northern Cyprus Campus, Cyprus, Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland, and also in some universities in USA such as Saint Louis University, Fairmont State University, State University of New York, Buffalo State College, Florida Atlantic University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, The University of Iowa.
