The Physical-Mathematical Society (PMS) was founded on February 14, 1898. This date is accepted as birthday of the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians (UBM). This happened several months after the establishment of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in Zeurich, in August 1897. On October 17, 1971, a Society of Bulgarian Mathematicians was formed from PMS. Since April 1977 when the annual regular meeting was developed into a Constituent Congress, this Society is called Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians.

At present the UBM has about 5000 members distributed in 71 sections. They are the teachers in Mathematics and Informatics, scientists, specialists and University professors. Annually, since 1972, UBM organizes Spring Conferences with scientific programs that cover mathematical topics, informatics, mathematical modeling, mechanics and mathematical education. Generally, discussions have been included in the Spring Conferences on educational problems, secondary school textbooks, professional training etc. Thus the Spring Conferences realize useful contacts between school teachers and University professors and specialists. The Proceedings of the Spring Conferences are published in the series "Mathematics and Mathematical Education", reviewed by MR, Zbl. Math. and RJ.

UBM is co-organizer of scientific events covering various directions in Mathematics and Informatics. In the period 1970--1994 about 150 international conferences, summer schools, symposia, seminars etc. took place with the participation of more than 10000 participants from 40 countries. Various national seminars act under the auspices of UBM. The National Colloquium on Mathematics, the Scientific Seminar on Informatics and others are among them. The work of UBM concerning talented students and teachers is of great importance. By its Commitee for Mathematics and Informatics competitions, consisting of scientists and University professors, UBM provides for scientific guarantee of all national Olympiads and competitions, as well as preparing the Bulgarian representatives in the International Mathematical Olympiads and Balkan Mathematical Olympiads. The Business Department of UBM caries out some projects concerning realization of software products, preparation of specialists etc.

In the international domain UBM collaborates with corresponding institutions from Greece, Hungary, Luxemburg, Poland, USA and others. These relations are based on direct contacts and exchange of specialists. Joint scientific events are held like the Bulgarian-Greek Seminars on Mathematical Education. UBM is a member of the European Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society.

Section "Biomathematics and Scientific Computations" at the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians is established on February 17, 1998. The aim of the section is to support the development of the field of Biomathematics and Scientific Computation and its applications to biological and bioengineering sciences. By the end of August 1998 the Section comprises 32 regular members, from them 18 mathematicians, 10 biologists and 4 engineers.

The Section organizes weekly a seminar on "Biomathematics and Scientific Computations". The seminar every last week of the month has introductory character and is attended by a broad audience of mathematicians, engineers and biologists.
