The Bride (Maiden)
In the region of Sredna Gora lived a marvellous beauty. Her family owned a rose distillery.
The oil-rich Rosa Damascena was imported from Minor Asia in the XVI century, and the most suitable soil for it was found in Sredna Gora. Rose picking starts before sunrise and lasts up to 10 hours, 1 kg of rose oil yield requires three to four tons of rose petals. It was known as “liquid gold” because its price was twice as high as the precious metal.
Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv has on display a large copper distillery tank used to boil rose petals in the town of Klissoura. It is the shape of a pear with a thinner upper part where the petals are poured in, while a fire simmers underneath the wider bottom of the tank. It was made in 1876 by a coppersmith master from Karlovo. It was donated by Lady Emily Strangford, an English traveller, and public figure, a supporter of the liberation of Bulgaria.
