The Bachelor (Lad)
The maid married a Shepherd from the Rhodope Mountains.
The shepherd lives in harmony with nature, thus he can read the weather forecast in the sky, by the stars and clouds, and the wind. The sheep can also “tell” what lies ahead. If on the day of St Dimitar (26 October) they are sleeping scattered around the pen it will be a good year, but if the sheep are huddled together, it is a sign that winter is going to be cold.
The shepherd is knowledgeable about herbs and uses them to heal both people and animals. During the long days away with the herd, he keeps busy woodcarving - engraving gegi (wooden poles), spoons, cups. Regional Ethnographic Museum - Plovdiv has on display a traditional shepherd’s gega - a long, hand-carved thin rod, made of solid wood the size of around a meter and a half. Shepherds use it to guide the livestock, as support when hiking up steep terrain, or to lean on and rest. The shepherd carries the gega in his right hand like ancient kings used to hold their sceptre. When he retires he hands it over to his heir.
The dairy farm is the shared home of the shepherd and the herd, lambs are born there, milking is done there and all dairy products are made there - butter, white cheese, yellow cheese, cottage cheese, buttermilk, etc.
