The Belt Buckles – a Wedding Gift
The shepherd gave his bride beautiful belt buckles.
Belt buckles are the most important female charms and are a must-have ornament in the bridal costume. They are forged or cast, richly decorated with filigree, granulation, enamel, and mother of pearl. They are round, oblong, or leaf-shaped. In size, they range from very small up to 25 cm in diameter or length. Decorations include images of animals, baroque elements, or oriental plant motifs - strawberry, palm tree, lotus, or tulip.
The buckles resemble "eyes" that protect, i.e., they reflect any evil looks fixed at the woman.
Towards the end of the 18th century buckles with mother of pearl tiles are more fashionable, engraved with scenes from the Holy Bible such as "Nativity", "Virgin and Child" and various saints, as well as religious symbols of animal aesthetics - double-headed eagles, dragons, gryphons, pigeons. Such tiles were made and brought from the Holy Places in Jerusalem and Mount Athos.
