Kazimir Malevich's Black Square (c. 1915) is considered as a revolution in art and is one of the most recognizable works of modernism. In fact, Malevich was far from being the first to depict a black square on a white background. As early as 1617, the English physicist and philosopher Robert Fludd painted "The Great Darkness", almost identical to the one of Malevich, which he used as an illustration for his book on cosmogony. In 1854, Gustave Dorè also depicted a black square-like quadrilateral on a white background, as a caricature. Although not exactly squares, nor only black, here we will also mention Paul Bilhaud, whose monochrome paintings exhibited in 1882 in Paris also refer to the genre of humor. "View of The Hague under cover of night" (1843) by Charles Albert d'Arnò, better known as Bertal is another example of an all-black composition.
