From the early presentation of human, animal and plant forms to modern sculpture, artists showcase their skills in working with stone, creating immortal art as a legacy for future generations. In the 20th century, sculptors began to make abstract stone sculptures that bring a fresh breath to this ancient practice. Choosing rough natural stones and shaping them according to a particular plastic project is an art mastered and practiced by many ancient societies, and the durability of the material makes it possible to look into their unique cultures and artistic practices. Introduced by Constantine Brancusi in 1906, the process of direct work is revolutionizing the tradition of stone sculpture. This practice was soon adopted by other prominent artists such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Jacob Epstein. The stone is relatively easy to extract and carve and opens up a wide range of possibilities as it can be roughly cut or delicately polished. Sculpture symposiums also play a major role in the development of stone sculpture, enabling contemporary sculptors to realize large-format free works in exterior environments.
